Sangli Police Crack Murder Case: Teen Arrested for Killing Education Director
In a significant breakthrough, the Sangli police announced on Sunday that they have successfully unraveled the mystery surrounding the death of Sanjay Prabhakar Paranjape, a 60-year-old director of an education society in Palus town, Sangli district. The investigation led to the detention of a 16-year-old boy, who has admitted to committing the murder on March 18, allegedly motivated by being reprimanded for trespassing.
Details of the Crime and Investigation
According to Inspector Siddheshwar Jangam of the Palus police, the juvenile suspect wrote his final paper for the Standard X board exam on the very day of the murder, March 18. The victim's son discovered Paranjape's body around 8:30 PM that evening in a compartment under the staircase of their apartment building. He had gone down to look for his father as the family was waiting for dinner, only to find him murdered.
During the investigation, police meticulously examined footage from CCTV cameras installed in and around the apartment complex. This surveillance led them to identify the boy, who resided nearby. It was revealed that the boy frequently jumped over the society's gate as a shortcut to his home and the main road. Paranjape, who was also a registered private money lender, would often scold him for this act of trespassing.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Murder
On the evening of March 18, Paranjape spotted the boy jumping over the gate while returning from a temple and confronted him with a scolding. In a fit of anger, the boy pushed Paranjape hard against a wall, causing a severe head injury. Fearing that Paranjape would report the attack to others, the boy then picked up a sharp object from the vicinity and stabbed the victim, resulting in his death.
After the fatal assault, the boy concealed the body in the apartment's compartment and fled the scene, taking Paranjape's ring and cellphone with him. Inspector Jangam stated that the Juvenile Justice Board has since transferred the minor accused to a juvenile reform home as of Saturday, following his detention.
Family's Concerns and Demand for Further Investigation
Paranjape's family has expressed deep distress over the incident and has urged the police to continue investigating the case from all possible angles. They described the deceased as a calm individual who would never intentionally hurt anyone, even with his words. Given this characterization, the family suspects that the boy's anger over being scolded for trespassing might be a superficial motive. They have called on the authorities to probe for any ulterior motives behind the killing, emphasizing that there could be more to the story than what has been uncovered so far.
It is noteworthy that Paranjape's elder brother, Uday, serves as the chairman of an education society that operates a school in the town, highlighting the family's longstanding involvement in the educational sector. The case has drawn attention to issues of juvenile delinquency and community safety in the region.
