Village Sarpanch Apprehended in Bribery Sting Operation in Jabalpur
In a significant crackdown on corruption at the grassroots level, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in Jabalpur has arrested a village sarpanch for allegedly accepting a bribe from a Below Poverty Line (BPL) resident. The incident highlights the persistent issue of exploitation faced by vulnerable communities in rural India.
Details of the Alleged Extortion
The accused, identified as Ramgopal Deharia, served as the sarpanch of Palari village. According to officials, Deharia had reportedly halted renovation work on a dilapidated hut belonging to Shivcharan Nagvanshi, a 40-year-old BPL resident living in makeshift conditions. When Nagvanshi approached the sarpanch to seek permission to resume the repairs, Deharia allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 15,000 to lift the restriction.
Facing severe financial constraints and unable to arrange the demanded amount, Nagvanshi grew increasingly frustrated with the alleged harassment. In a bold move, he decided to report the matter to the EOW office in Jabalpur, setting the stage for a meticulously planned sting operation.
EOW's Swift Action and Trap
Upon receiving the complaint, EOW officials promptly verified the allegations and confirmed that a bribe had indeed been solicited. A specialized trap team was formed to catch the accused in the act. As per the plan, the sarpanch instructed Nagvanshi to meet him at the Seoni bus stand on Monday with the money.
In a dramatic turn of events, as soon as Nagvanshi handed over the marked currency notes, the EOW team swiftly intervened, apprehending Deharia red-handed while he was accepting the bribe. Officials recovered the full amount of Rs 15,000 from the accused at the scene, providing concrete evidence for the case.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
A formal case has been registered against Ramgopal Deharia under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act (Amended 2018), which deals with public servants taking undue advantage to perform or delay public duty. The EOW has emphasized that further investigation is underway to uncover any additional details or potential accomplices in this matter.
This incident underscores the critical role of anti-corruption agencies in safeguarding the rights of economically disadvantaged citizens and ensuring accountability in local governance. It also serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by BPL families in accessing basic amenities without falling prey to corrupt practices.
