Supreme Court Seeks Centre's Reply on Banning Liquor in Small Packs
SC Notice to Centre on Ban of Liquor in Tetra Packs, Sachets

The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the central government on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a ban on the sale of liquor in tetra packs and sachets. The PIL, filed by an NGO, argues that such packaging makes alcohol easily accessible and affordable, leading to increased consumption and associated health hazards.

Plea Highlights Health Concerns

The petitioner contended that small packs encourage excessive drinking, especially among youth and low-income groups, and violate the right to life under Article 21. It also pointed out that tetra packs and sachets are not covered under existing regulations, creating a regulatory gap.

Centre's Response Sought

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice P.S. Narasimha sought the Centre's response within four weeks. The matter will be heard next after the reply is filed.

The PIL also urged the court to direct the government to formulate a policy to regulate packaging of alcoholic beverages to curb misuse. The NGO cited instances of easy availability of such small packs near schools and colleges.

This development comes amid growing concerns over alcohol abuse in the country. The court's intervention could lead to stricter norms on liquor packaging and sale.
