Supreme Court Acknowledges Rajasthan Government's Compliance on River Pollution Issue
The Supreme Court of India, on Wednesday, formally took on record the Rajasthan government's compliance report regarding the severe pollution affecting the Jojari-Bandi-Luni river system. The court specifically commended the collaborative and coordinated efforts demonstrated by the high-level ecosystem oversight committee alongside various state authorities.
Addressing Critical Environmental and Public Health Concerns
The legal matter primarily addresses the profoundly detrimental effects caused by industrial effluents and untreated sewage being discharged into the river network. This pollution has created serious and far-reaching implications for agriculture, groundwater quality, local ecosystems, and public health across the western regions of Rajasthan.
During the court proceedings, Additional Advocate General Shiv Mangal Sharma provided a detailed report to the bench. He confirmed that all logistical and administrative issues previously noted in the oversight committee's initial assessment report have now been successfully resolved by the state administration.
Committee's Findings and Comprehensive Restoration Blueprint
The high-level committee's first official status report, which was presented before the Supreme Court, detailed extensive field inspections conducted at multiple industrial clusters, sewage treatment plants, and numerous affected villages. These inspections uncovered widespread and extensive environmental damage directly attributable to the ongoing pollution.
The report critically highlighted several key issues, including:
- Significant degradation of valuable agricultural land
- Widespread contamination of groundwater resources
- Severe ecological harm to local flora and fauna
In response to these findings, the committee proposed a series of comprehensive and scientifically-grounded measures aimed at the long-term restoration of the river system. A central recommendation involves the formulation of a detailed, scientifically-based blueprint specifically designed for rejuvenating the interconnected Jojari–Bandi–Luni river network.
The Rajasthan government, through its counsel, formally pledged its full support and commitment to implementing this restoration blueprint and the committee's broader recommendations.
Unanimous Support and Judicial Expectations
Legal counsel representing both the concerned industries and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change voiced no objections to the committee's proposed recommendations, indicating a consensus on the path forward.
The Supreme Court bench expressed its clear expectation for continued and sustained collaboration from the Rajasthan state government and the State Pollution Control Board in executing the cleanup and restoration plans. The justices commended the oversight committee for its diligent and public-interest-oriented efforts in addressing this critical environmental issue.
After hearing all submissions, the court reserved its final order. This order will be passed after the bench has thoroughly considered the committee's detailed recommendations and the further remedial steps required to ensure the complete ecological restoration of the vital river system.
