In a brazen act, thieves targeted a jewellery store in Mihijam, Jharkhand, making off with ornaments worth several lakhs of rupees. This incident, occurring on Thursday night, marks the second such robbery in the Jamtara district within a short span, following a violent armed robbery earlier in the week.
Details of the Mihijam Jewellery Theft
The burglary took place at Shirdi Jewellers, located on Chittaranjan Road near the railway station in Mihijam. According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the owner, Shiv Prasad Saw, on Friday, the perpetrators gained entry by cutting open a portion of the store's rear wall.
Once inside, the thieves used a cutter machine to slice through an almirah (cabinet) containing gold and silver jewellery. They then fled with the valuables. The exact quantity and total value of the stolen items are still being assessed, as stated by Saw to reporters after police arrived at the scene.
Police Investigation and Previous Incident
Officers from the Mihijam police station have launched an investigation. "Investigation of nearby CCTV footage is underway with other technical leads to identify the culprits being pursued," confirmed a police officer.
This theft comes close on the heels of another serious crime in the district. On Wednesday evening, armed miscreants robbed a jewellery store at the bustling Kayasthapada Chowk in Jamtara town. In that incident, the robbers shot at the store owner while fleeing. As of Friday, police officials stated that significant headway is yet to be made in solving that case.
Political Reaction and Demand for Security
The back-to-back incidents have sparked concern among local residents and political figures. Sumit Sharan, the president of the district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expressed alarm over the recent thefts. He has called for heightened police vigilance in the area to prevent further criminal activities and ensure the safety of businesses and citizens.
The twin robberies have put a spotlight on law and order in the region, raising questions about the security measures for commercial establishments, especially jewellery stores which are often prime targets for thieves.
