Security Guard Apprehended for Pilfering Foreign Currency from Srirangam Temple Offerings

According to police reports, the episode unfolded on Wednesday morning when temple authorities were engaged in the meticulous process of counting the monetary offerings that devotees had deposited in the hundials. K Shankar, a 48-year-old resident of Amma Mandapam Road in Trichy, who was employed on a temporary basis as a security guard at the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple, reportedly volunteered to assist with the counting procedure.
Investigators revealed that Shankar allegedly seized the opportunity to clandestinely conceal several foreign currency notes while participating in the counting activity. His behavior quickly aroused suspicion among other temple staff members, who decided to conduct a thorough check on his person.
Substantial Evidence Leads to Immediate Legal Action
The search yielded damning evidence: Shankar was found to be in possession of precisely 27 foreign currency notes, with an estimated total value of approximately Rs 12,500. The discovery prompted temple authorities to file an official complaint with local law enforcement.
R Venkatesan, the executive officer of the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple, formally lodged the complaint, leading police to register a case against Shankar. The charges have been filed under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), reflecting the serious nature of the alleged theft from a place of worship.
