Bengaluru Security Guard Arrested for Stealing IDF Officer's Bag at Chabad House
Security guard steals Israeli officer's bag in Bengaluru

In a significant security lapse, an outsourced guard at a prominent Jewish community centre in Bengaluru has been arrested for allegedly stealing the luggage of a visiting Israeli military officer. The incident, which occurred at the Chabad House in Shivajinagar, has raised concerns about protocol at sensitive locations hosting foreign dignitaries.

Theft During Official Delegation Visit

The case came to light after the manager of the Chabad House lodged a formal complaint with the Commercial Street police station. The complaint stated that an official delegation from Israel, which included Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officer Ora Ben-Hur, visited the centre on December 15. As per standard procedure, security personnel were tasked with carrying the visitors' luggage to their rooms.

However, Officer Ben-Hur discovered that only one of her two bags was delivered. Suspicion quickly fell on the security staff, prompting a review of the premises' CCTV footage. The footage allegedly showed the accused guard, identified as 55-year-old Dorai Raj, walking away with the missing bag.

Swift Police Action and Recovery

Acting on the complaint, the Bengaluru police moved quickly. Dorai Raj was arrested on the same day. During the investigation, the police successfully recovered the stolen bag from his possession. Along with the bag, authorities also seized Rs 2,000 in cash believed to be from the officer.

A case has been registered under Section 303 (2) (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Notably, the police have clarified that the offence is non-cognizable and bailable. Consequently, Raj was released on station bail shortly after his arrest but is required to appear for further questioning when summoned.

Confession and Missing Items

In a statement to the press, a police officer involved in the case revealed key details. "We have questioned Dorai Raj, and he confessed that he carried the bag assuming it would contain more money," the officer said. The investigation also confirmed that neither the IDF officer nor the Israeli consulate has reported any other valuable items or crucial documents missing from the bag beyond the recovered cash.

This detail suggests the primary motive was financial gain rather than targeting sensitive documents related to the officer's official capacity. The prompt recovery of the bag likely prevented further complications.

Implications and Security Review

The incident has cast a spotlight on the vetting and monitoring of outsourced security personnel at locations frequently visited by foreign officials and tourists. The Chabad House, a global network of Jewish community centres, often hosts Israeli citizens and officials, making robust security protocols paramount.

While the local police handled the matter with efficiency, the event underscores the need for continuous background checks and supervision of staff in such sensitive environments. The case remains open as authorities complete their formal procedures under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
