Seventh Arrest Made in Mumbai's Goregaon Drug Overdose Tragedy
Mumbai police have arrested a 22-year-old college student, marking the seventh individual taken into custody in connection with the suspected drug overdose case in Goregaon that claimed the lives of two MBA students and left a third in critical condition. Vineet Gerlani was produced before a magistrate court at Borivli on Thursday alongside the six other accused persons. The magistrate has remanded all seven individuals to police custody until April 18 as the investigation intensifies.
Tragic Incident at Music Concert
The case stems from a devastating incident at a music concert held at Nesco in Goregaon East on April 11. A group of 19 MBA students from a prestigious management institute attended the event, where a 28-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman consumed Ecstasy pills and subsequently fell ill. Both students tragically passed away at different hospitals the following day, while a third student—a 25-year-old woman—remains in critical condition at a medical facility.
Chain of Arrests and Drug Supply Network
Police initially arrested two fellow students—Ronak Khandelwal and Pratik Pandey—for allegedly providing the drugs. During interrogation, Pandey revealed that construction businessman Anand Patel had supplied him with 20 Ecstasy pills, leading to Patel's subsequent arrest. The investigation has now expanded to target two additional individuals who allegedly provided drugs to Patel and Pandey, both of whom were present at the music concert along with Gerlani.
Digital Evidence Uncovered
Investigators have reportedly discovered compelling evidence on Gerlani's phone, including Snapchat conversations that indicate he had "supplied drugs to several people and received money into his bank account." Police have also identified a significant volume of phone calls between Gerlani and one of the two wanted individuals, along with financial transactions that are being examined for possible connections to narcotics sales.
Probing a Larger Narcotics Racket
In their remand application presented before the court, police have revealed that the two wanted individuals had been present at previous events in Goregaon, prompting authorities to investigate the possibility of a larger drug distribution network operating in the area. The application further discloses that the 24-year-old woman who died from the suspected Ecstasy overdose had previously taken the same drug at another Goregaon event with Pandey.
Additional evidence includes claims that the accused discussed drug procurement and financial dealings in a WhatsApp group chat that has since been deleted, complicating but not halting the investigation.
Legal Arguments and Corporate Response
A lawyer representing two Nesco employees who have also been arrested in the case argued before the Borivli magistrate court that his clients had obtained all necessary permissions for the music concert and followed comprehensive security protocols. "We have been organizing events at Nesco since 1995, including international exhibitions, and there has never been any issue," the lawyer stated, objecting to their association with "drug peddlers."
In response to the incident, Nesco issued a disclosure to stock exchanges affirming their strict zero-tolerance policy toward the possession, use, or distribution of illegal substances within their premises.
Defense Arguments and Ongoing Investigation
Lawyers representing the students emphasized that their clients had no prior criminal records and had actually assisted by rushing the critically ill woman to the hospital. Advocates Surendra Landge and Azad Gupta, representing Gerlani and Patel respectively, maintained that the accusations against their clients are unfounded.
As the investigation continues, Mumbai police are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry, examining digital evidence, financial records, and witness statements to unravel what appears to be a complex drug distribution network with potentially wider implications beyond this tragic incident.
