Shamgarh Shutdown: 2nd Day of Protests After Obscene Video Case Arrests
Shamgarh shutdown continues over obscene video case arrests

The town of Shamgarh in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur district remained under a complete shutdown for the second consecutive day on Saturday. This widespread protest was triggered by the arrest of two youths accused of recording and circulating an obscene video of a 16-year-old girl.

Administration Takes Action Amid Tensions

Under heavy police security, the local administration carried out a demolition drive targeting illegal portions of the houses belonging to the accused, identified as Rihan and Babu. The operation began in the morning at Rihan's house, where an encroached structure was removed. A bulldozer then proceeded to Babu's residence. A large crowd gathered at the sites, observing the action throughout the day.

ASP Hemlata Kuril confirmed that a significant police force was deployed in the area to maintain order. She appealed to residents to remain calm and stated that both accused were produced in court and sent to judicial remand.

Protesters Demand Stronger Action

Despite the administration's steps, protesters expressed dissatisfaction, accusing officials of taking only partial action. They alleged that only the front portions of the houses were demolished, leaving the remaining illegal construction untouched. Anger resurfaced by evening, with groups gathering in the streets once again.

The demonstrations were led by multiple organisations, some of which had announced an indefinite shutdown after a meeting on Friday night. Members of these groups claimed the crime was the work of a larger gang that targeted girls for blackmail. They issued a warning: if the remaining accused are not arrested by Sunday noon, a stronger agitation will follow.

Community Appeals and Continued Unrest

A delegation from the Muslim community met SP Vinod Kumar Meena, seeking firm legal action against the accused and urging the administration to maintain peace in the town. By afternoon, a large number of residents had gathered in different parts of Shamgarh, and organisations called for the complete shutdown to continue on Sunday.

ASP Kuril, addressing the situation, said, "They are satisfied by the actions taken and we have maintained a dialogue with the protestors." However, heavy police deployment continues across Shamgarh. The administration has assured residents that strong legal action will be taken against everyone involved in the case.
