Shillong Forest Raids: Timber, Trucks Seized in West Garo Hills Crackdown
Forest department officials in Meghalaya have launched a major operation against illegal activities in the West Garo Hills district. The coordinated raid-cum-patrolling drive targeted unauthorized mining and timber smuggling. Authorities seized timber, trucks, and various tools during the action.
Intelligence-Led Operation
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, officials moved into action on Saturday. They focused on the Gumaijhora and Chibinang Chanupara areas, also known as Gopgopara. The teams intercepted activities linked to illegal extraction in these locations.
The operation represented a joint effort between multiple agencies. The forest department led the charge under the assistant conservator of forests. They worked alongside the district administration, guided by the magistrate, and local police forces. This collaboration highlighted the government's firm stance against illegal exploitation of natural resources.
Gumaijhora Findings
At the Gumaijhora site, forest officials inspected an area suspected of illegal earth mining. They collected substantial evidence for further inquiry. This evidence included written statements and photographs documenting the activities.
Officers also detected illegal sand mining at a nearby stream. However, the offenders fled the scene upon the arrival of authorities. Despite their escape, officials managed to seize extraction tools used in the operation.
Authorities traced a JCB machine allegedly involved in the illegal activity to its owner. They issued a summon letter to the owner for verification purposes. This step forms part of the ongoing investigation into the mining operations.
Chanupara Seizures
Meanwhile, in Chanupara, officials made significant seizures related to timber smuggling. They confiscated heavy machinery used in these illegal operations. The action disrupted smuggling activities in the area.
Officers intercepted an animal cart transporting timber logs without valid permits. They confiscated both the cart and the timber it carried. This interception prevented the illegal movement of forest resources.
The operation also targeted illegal earth mining in Chanupara. Authorities detained one JCB machine, a dumper truck loaded with earth, and a tractor. All these vehicles were taken to the Hollaidonga range office for further examination.
Landholders and vehicle owners have received summon letters for inquiry. The forest department wants to question them about their involvement in the illegal activities.
Ongoing Investigations
The forest department confirmed that investigations continue into the seized equipment. Officials are working to establish clear ownership of the machinery and vehicles. They also aim to trace the origin of the confiscated timber.
These efforts demonstrate the department's commitment to protecting Meghalaya's natural resources. The operation sends a strong message against environmental crimes in the region.
