SHRC Orders Return of Certificates to Disabled MBBS Student

Kollam: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has intervened in a case where a student with hearing impairment faced difficulties in continuing her MBBS studies at the Government Medical College, Parippally, due to the non-return of her original certificates. SHRC member V Geetha ordered urgent action on the complaint, directing the medical college superintendent to intervene immediately and take all possible measures to resolve the issue.

Urgent Intervention Ordered

The SHRC directed the college superintendent to submit a detailed report within seven days, both via email and by post, to the commission. The case is scheduled to be taken up at the SHRC headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram on June 3. The commission emphasized that a child's further education cannot be denied due to the non-receipt of certificates.

Background of the Case

The student had secured admission to the MBBS course under the disability quota but was facing hurdles in continuing her studies because the college authorities withheld her original certificates. The SHRC's order aims to ensure that the student's right to education is not compromised.
