The State Investigation Agency (SIA) of Jammu and Kashmir Police has obtained an Interpol Red Corner Notice (RCN) against designated Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Imtiyaz Ahmad Kandoo in connection with a 2013 terrorist attack that killed four police personnel. Officials announced the development on Saturday, calling it a significant milestone in the investigation.
Details of the 2013 Tarzoo Attack
The attack occurred in the Tarzoo area of north Kashmir's Baramulla district in 2013. Four Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel lost their lives in the incident. The case has been under investigation by the SIA, which has now achieved a breakthrough by securing the international arrest warrant.
Interpol Red Corner Notice Against Imtiyaz Ahmad Kandoo
According to officials, the RCN targets Imtiyaz Ahmad Kandoo, alias Fayaz alias Sajad, a resident of Kraltang, Sopore. Kandoo has been an active member and commander of the proscribed terrorist outfit Hizbul Mujahideen since 2010. In October 2022, the Indian government designated him as a Designated Individual Terrorist due to his sustained involvement in terrorist activities.
"In a breakthrough in its sustained counter-terrorism efforts, the SIA Kashmir has secured an Interpol Red Corner Notice against designated Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Imtiyaz Ahmad Kandoo," officials said.
Significance of the Red Corner Notice
The Red Corner Notice is a global alert issued by Interpol to seek the location and arrest of a wanted person for extradition or similar legal action. This development marks a significant step in the investigation of the 2013 Tarzoo attack case, as it enables law enforcement agencies worldwide to cooperate in apprehending Kandoo.
The SIA's success in obtaining the RCN underscores the agency's persistent efforts to bring terrorists to justice and highlights the international dimension of counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
