A 25-year-old man launched a brutal attack on three members of a family, including a woman and a minor boy, with a sickle in Mayiladuthurai on Sunday morning. The assailant, identified as Ashok, later surrendered to the police shortly after the incident.

Details of the Attack

According to police, Ashok attacked Karpagam, 42, a resident of Kumbakonam, while she was collecting water from a public tap. She sustained multiple cut injuries from the sickle. When her husband Selvam, a gold appraiser at a local bank, and their 14-year-old son intervened to stop the assault, they were also attacked. The violent episode was triggered by a previous altercation over water collection on the same morning.

Victims' Condition

All three victims were initially admitted to the government hospital in Mayiladuthurai for treatment. Karpagam, who suffered serious injuries, was later referred to the Thanjavur government hospital for advanced medical care. The condition of Selvam and their son is reported to be stable.

Surrender and Investigation

After the attack, Ashok surrendered at the Mayiladuthurai police station. Police subsequently took him to the government hospital for a medical examination. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
