Police Uncover Shocking Child Trafficking Plot in Silchar
In a swift and decisive operation, Silchar police have thwarted an alleged newborn trafficking attempt, leading to the arrest of a suspected middleman. The heart-wrenching case involves a baby boy who was taken from his biological mother under deceptive circumstances before being rescued unharmed from a childless couple.
The Deceptive Handover and Dramatic Rescue
The incident came to light after the victim mother, Somirun Nessa, originally from Ratabari in Sribhumi district, filed a formal complaint. According to her First Information Report (FIR), she had been residing in a rented house in Madhurband with the infant's father, Gulzar Hossain Talukdar. The police revealed that Gulzar is also married to Roshna Begum, his first wife who became the infant's stepmother.
The timeline of events shows a calculated plan unfolding. Somirun delivered her baby boy at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) on October 27 and was discharged on November 3. Just four days later, on November 7, Gulzar arrived at her residence accompanied by Roshna and the now-arrested accused, Amir Hossain of Madhurband, Silchar.
The trio convinced Somirun they were taking her and the newborn to the family home in Ratabari. Trusting them, the young mother agreed. They proceeded to Ramnagar ISBT in Silchar, where while waiting for transport, Gulzar took the infant away, promising a quick return. Roshna and Amir followed him, and none of the three returned, leaving Somirun alone and realizing she had been cruelly deceived.
Police Action and Wider Network Suspicions
Acting promptly on Somirun's complaint, Silchar police apprehended Amir Hossain on Thursday. During interrogation, officers gathered crucial information that led them to trace the baby to a childless couple at the woman's paternal home in Durganagar, Udarband.
The rescued couple, residents of Arkatipur, claimed they were misled into believing that Roshna was the biological mother who had willingly handed over the child. They denied any monetary transaction occurred, though investigators suspect financial dealings and a deeper trafficking angle.
Police sources indicate that Amir Hossain was known locally for his brokerage activities and is suspected to be a link in a wider child-selling network active in the Barak Valley region. Amir was produced in court on Thursday and remanded in judicial custody.
Ongoing Investigation and Manhunt
While one accused is in custody, the prime suspects - the infant's father Gulzar Hossain Talukdar and stepmother Roshna Begum - remain absconding. Police have launched an intensive manhunt to trace the fleeing couple.
Officials confirmed that more arrests are likely as the investigation expands into what appears to be an organized child trafficking racket. The case has sent shockwaves through the Silchar community and highlighted the grim reality of infant trafficking operations in the region.
The rescued baby boy is now safe and receiving appropriate care as authorities continue their probe into this disturbing case of alleged parental betrayal and child exploitation.
