In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, police in Sribhumi, Silchar, made a massive narcotics seizure on Thursday, confiscating more than three quintals of ganja from a pick-up van. The illicit drugs have an estimated street value of Rs 50 lakh, marking one of the substantial drug busts in the region recently.
Dramatic Chase and Escape
The operation unfolded on NH 8 near the Sonakhira area when police officials attempted to stop the suspicious vehicle for inspection. According to authorities, the driver initially ignored police signals to pull over and instead accelerated in an attempt to escape. A pursuit ensued as law enforcement officers chased the speeding pick-up van.
In a dramatic turn of events, the driver eventually abandoned the vehicle and managed to flee on foot, evading capture despite extensive search efforts by the police team. The Tripura-registered pick-up van was left unattended, allowing officers to conduct a thorough search of the vehicle.
Clever Concealment Uncovered
Upon examining the abandoned vehicle, police discovered an elaborate concealment method used to hide the massive quantity of narcotics. The ganja, carefully packed in multiple bags, was found hidden beneath numerous empty wooden boxes that had been arranged to create a false bottom in the vehicle.
A senior police official confirmed the scale of the seizure, stating that the confiscated quantity exceeds three quintals with an approximate market value of Rs 50,00,000. The sophisticated hiding technique indicated the involvement of experienced drug traffickers familiar with evasion tactics.

Law enforcement authorities have taken custody of both the substantial drug consignment and the pick-up van used for transportation.
