Sivasagar Police Enhances Training with Interactive Session for Probationary DSPs

In a significant move to bridge the gap between theoretical training and practical policing, the Sivasagar police department hosted an engaging interactive session on Thursday for probationary deputy superintendents of police (DSPs). These officers were on a field exposure visit to the district, aimed at providing them with firsthand insights into ground-level operations.

Insights into Real-World Policing Practices

The session, led by Sivasagar SSP Subhashish Baruah and other senior police officials, offered the newly inducted officers a comprehensive overview of real-world policing practices. The probationary DSPs, who have joined the Assam Police Service (APS) after clearing the competitive Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) exams, gained valuable knowledge on law enforcement strategies, operational challenges, and key district-level initiatives focused on community outreach and public safety.

SSP Subhashish Baruah emphasized the importance of field exposure, stating, "Field exposure is an indispensable component for an officer’s development. Understanding the realities of policing on the ground is what truly prepares them for the responsibilities ahead. We shared our experiences, the challenges we face in Sivasagar, and the initiatives we have undertaken to ensure public safety and community trust. Hearing directly from experienced officers about the complexities of field policing gives them a clearer picture of what to expect and how to respond effectively."

Comprehensive Training Framework of Assam Police

The Assam Police DSP (Probationary) training is a detailed program lasting approximately 52 weeks. It includes:

  • A Basic Training Course conducted at institutions such as the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) in Meghalaya or the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy (LBPA) in Dergaon.
  • An initial induction at the Assam Administrative Staff College.
  • Intensive indoor modules covering subjects like law and forensic science.
  • Outdoor modules focusing on physical conditioning and weapons handling.

This structured training is designed to equip officers with the skills necessary for active field duty, with field exposure visits playing a critical role in allowing probationary officers to observe and engage with police systems across various districts in Assam.

Impact of Field Exposure on Officer Development

The interactive session in Sivasagar is part of a broader effort to enhance the practical understanding of probationary DSPs. By exposing them to the day-to-day challenges and successes of policing, the Assam Police aims to foster a more effective and responsive law enforcement force. Such initiatives help in building community trust and ensuring that officers are well-prepared to handle the complexities of their roles in maintaining public order and safety.
