Belgian Malinois Sniffer Dog Proves Crucial in Solving Lucknow Murder Mystery
In a remarkable display of canine intelligence and police work, a Belgian Malinois sniffer dog from the Uttar Pradesh Police force played a pivotal role in apprehending two individuals responsible for the brutal murder of a 69-year-old woman in Lucknow. The elderly victim, Nirmala Devi, was killed after she became an unintended witness to an illicit relationship between the accused.
Gruesome Crime Unfolds in Nishatganj
The case, which sent shockwaves through the Nishatganj locality, involved Ranjana Verma, 36, and her lover Rajan Sharma, 21. According to police reports, the duo strangled Nirmala Devi to death on a Saturday afternoon after binding her hands and legs. Investigators initially had no inkling that the motive stemmed from the victim's opposition to their relationship, a seemingly petty reason for such a heinous act.
Canine Tracking Leads to Breakthrough
The investigation took a decisive turn when the Belgian Malinois was deployed to the crime scene. Officers first presented the dog with key scent sources, including the victim's clothing, bedding, and areas showing signs of struggle. The highly trained animal then began tracking from inside the room, moving systematically through the house and toward an exit point, effectively mapping the escape route used by the perpetrators.
The dog continued its pursuit outside, navigating a crowded neighborhood before circling back to a group of bystanders. It exhibited clear alert behaviors—such as pausing, focusing intently, and attempting to approach—specifically around Rajan Sharma. Despite Rajan's efforts to blend into the crowd and shift positions, the dog persistently returned to him, solidifying police suspicions and leaving onlookers stunned.
Evidence Corroborates Canine Findings
Further scrutiny revealed that the accused had deliberately disabled the house's CCTV cameras between 2 pm and 4 pm to avoid detection. However, footage captured after 4 pm showed Ranjana Verma leaving the premises with Rajan Sharma, directly supporting the sniffer dog's tracking results.
The crime was discovered when the victim's 18-year-old grandson, Aditya, returned home around 4 pm and found his grandmother unconscious and bound. He immediately alerted his father, Tridesh Verma, and attempted to contact his mother.
Deception Unravels Under Interrogation
Police noted that the accused initially tried to mislead investigators by staging the murder as a robbery. Ranjana Verma pretended to grieve and claimed she was not present at the time of the incident. Yet, inconsistencies in the CCTV footage, combined with the dog squad's precise tracking, led to sustained interrogation. Rajan Sharma eventually confessed, admitting he had switched off the CCTV system and conspired with Ranjana to commit the murder.
"Rajan revealed that he was in a relationship with Ranjana for four years and that the victim strongly opposed it, which led them to plan the crime," stated ACP Mahanagar Ankit Kumar.

A retired Belgian Malinois trainer from a paramilitary force explained the science behind such tracking operations. These dogs are trained to isolate and follow human scent molecules—such as skin cells and sweat particles—left at crime scenes. "They don't identify a 'criminal' in a legal sense, but they track scent continuity. If a suspect has been at or near the crime scene recently, the dog can connect that scent trail with high accuracy, even in crowded environments," the trainer elaborated.
He added that Belgian Malinois are exceptionally effective due to their high intelligence, intense focus, and ability to perform under pressure, making them ideal for crime scene investigations. This case underscores the invaluable role of trained canines in modern law enforcement, proving that sometimes, the best detective has four legs and a keen nose.
