A tragic incident in Kanpur's Chakeri area has left a 75-year-old woman grieving the brutal death of her son, who was allegedly beaten to death by a neighbour. The victim, identified as Bharat, succumbed to his injuries at home after a severe assault on Sunday night.
The Fatal Night in Tatiyan Jhanaka
The incident occurred in the Tatiyan Jhanaka locality on the night of Sunday. According to the victim's mother, Madhuri, her son Bharat returned home around 11:30 pm. He was intoxicated and began banging on the door of their residence.
A young man from the neighbourhood emerged, confronted Bharat, and a verbal altercation ensued. When Bharat protested the abuse, the neighbour allegedly dragged him outside and launched a vicious attack. The assailant used sticks to beat Bharat severely before leaving him injured on the road and fleeing the scene.
Madhuri, despite her age, managed to bring her critically injured son back inside their home. However, the family's ordeal was far from over.
A Desperate Struggle for Help
By Monday morning, Bharat's condition was dire, but the family faced an insurmountable financial hurdle. Madhuri had only Rs 100 at her disposal, which was insufficient to secure proper medical treatment for her son.
The elderly woman pleaded for assistance from others in the colony, but her cries for help went unanswered. With no one coming forward to aid them, Bharat remained at home without medical attention. He eventually died around 7 pm on Monday evening.
In a poignant display of humanity, a police constable later stepped forward to perform the man's last rites, covering the expenses from his own pocket.
Police Investigation and Family Background
Following the death, the Chakeri police initiated an investigation. Officers completed the panchnama proceedings with five residents of the colony to gather evidence.
Acting Station In-Charge Mohammad Rizwan provided an update on the case. He stated that the initial postmortem report did not provide a clear cause of death. Consequently, the viscera has been preserved for further analysis. Police are actively investigating the allegations made by the victim's family.
The family hails from Nehra village in Darbhanga, Bihar. Madhuri had moved to Kanpur's Tatiyan Jhanaka locality in May of this year to live with her younger son, Bharat. Her husband, Santosh Kumar, remains in Bihar, while her elder son, Rohit, works in the private sector in Mathura.
Bharat, who worked as a daily wage labourer, reportedly struggled with alcohol addiction. The incident highlights the vulnerabilities faced by migrant families and the devastating consequences of communal violence.
