A speeding recovery van caused significant damage in Guwahati's Christian Basti area on Saturday morning after it lost control and crashed into three roadside shops. The incident has reignited concerns over road safety and rash driving in the bustling city.

The accident occurred in the early hours on the busy Guwahati-Shillong Road stretch. According to traffic police officials from the Dispur police station, the van was travelling from Ganeshguri to Paltan Bazar when it suddenly veered off course.
Bashab Thakuria, the traffic IC at Dispur PS's traffic branch, stated that the van was speeding before it swerved sharply into the shopfronts. The vehicle severely damaged one flower shop and two restaurants, scattering debris across the road and creating a scene of destruction.
Police Investigation and Immediate Aftermath
Traffic personnel rushed to the site promptly, secured the area, and seized the vehicle for investigation. Preliminary findings point to a combination of brake failure and high speed as the likely cause of the crash.
The driver of the van has been detained for questioning. While no major injuries were reported, officials have not ruled out further investigation. "We will investigate thoroughly to determine whether the driver was in an inebriated state while driving," added Thakuria.
