Uttarakhand STF Apprehends Interstate Shooter in High-Profile 2020 Murder Case
The Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) has made a significant breakthrough by arresting Rinku Sharma, also known as Pandit, an interstate shooter with a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head. This arrest is directly connected to the 2020 murder of Rudrapur councillor Prakash Singh Dhami, a case that had sent shockwaves through the region.
Details of the 2020 Murder That Sparked Outrage
The incident occurred on October 12, 2020, when Dhami, a BJP-supported councillor representing the Bhadaipura ward, was brutally shot dead outside his residence in broad daylight. According to police investigations, the assailants arrived in a vehicle, cleverly lured Dhami out of his home, and then opened indiscriminate fire at close range. Despite his desperate attempts to flee, Dhami succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. The entire gruesome episode was captured on CCTV footage, which later fueled widespread public outrage and demands for justice.
Political Rivalry and Hired Shooters Uncovered in Probe
Subsequent investigations revealed that the murder was not a random act of violence but stemmed from deep-seated political rivalry and a fierce battle for local dominance. It was alleged that professional shooters from outside Uttarakhand were hired for nearly Rs 4 lakh to execute the killing. Prior to this arrest, police had already taken six of the seven accused into custody, but Sharma had managed to evade capture since the incident, remaining a fugitive.
STF's Coordinated Operation and Technical Surveillance Lead to Arrest
Senior Superintendent of Police (STF) Ajay Singh provided insights into the operation, stating, "The accused had been skillfully evading arrest by frequently changing his locations and hiding spots. Our dedicated teams employed a combination of advanced technical surveillance and reliable human intelligence to meticulously track his movements."
He further elaborated, "Acting on specific and actionable input, we successfully arrested the accused from Rudrapur after a well-coordinated and strategic operation. Rinku Sharma is identified as a habitual offender with a long criminal record, including multiple cases of murder, attempt to murder, robbery, and extortion registered across various states. All necessary legal proceedings are now underway to ensure justice is served."
This arrest marks a crucial step forward in a case that highlights the dangerous intersections of crime and politics, underscoring the relentless efforts of law enforcement to bring perpetrators to justice.
