Engineering Student Orchestrates Fake Kidnapping to Extort Ransom from Family
In a shocking incident in Bhubaneswar, the Info Valley police have detained a 22-year-old final-year engineering student along with three of his friends for allegedly plotting his own kidnapping. The elaborate scheme was designed to demand a ransom of Rs 13 lakh from his family, purportedly to pay off substantial debts he had accumulated.
Swift Police Action Uncovers the Hoax
The case unfolded when the student's father, a resident of Kalahandi district, filed a formal complaint at the Info Valley police station on Wednesday. He reported that his son had been kidnapped by unknown miscreants who were demanding the hefty ransom for his safe release. The student was residing with friends in a rented accommodation in the Madanpur area of the city at the time.
Police Commissioner S Dev Datta Singh detailed the rapid response, stating, "We acted swiftly by registering a kidnapping case and forming a special investigation team. Utilizing technical inputs, human intelligence, and immediate ground action, our officers successfully traced the supposed victim within just one hour to a house located near the Madanpur panchayat office. He was rescued safely, and several associates involved were promptly detained."
Investigation Reveals Motive of Debt and Extravagance
During the subsequent investigation, police uncovered that the student had fabricated the entire abduction scenario. His motive was to coerce his father into paying off debts that he had incurred through years of extravagant spending on expensive hobbies and lifestyle choices. It was revealed that he had borrowed approximately Rs 10 lakh from friends over an extended period.
An officer involved in the case explained, "Our investigation has now shifted focus to tracing exactly how such a large sum of money was spent. We have learned that he borrowed nearly Rs 10 lakh from friends over the years. With assistance from his friends, he reportedly called his parents from his own mobile phone, falsely claiming he had been kidnapped and that the kidnappers were demanding the ransom."
Legal Leniency Due to Student Status
In a notable decision, the police have opted not to proceed with a formal arrest given that the primary accused is a student. The officer added, "Since the victim, who is also the prime accused, is a student, we will not proceed with a formal arrest. He and his friends will be released after giving them a stern warning about the serious consequences of such actions."
