Surat Family Tragedy: Gas Leak Suspected in Deaths of Couple and Son
A devastating incident unfolded in the Lal Gate area of Surat on Tuesday, claiming the lives of three family members—a couple and their 12-year-old son—in what authorities suspect was a fatal gas leak. The bodies of Faiz Ahmed Saiyed (40), his wife Mubina Ahmed, and their son Noman were discovered early in the morning by a relative, sending shockwaves through the community.
Discovery of the Tragedy
The grim discovery was made when a family member noticed that the household had not woken up at their usual time and that the child had not left for school. After repeated knocks went unanswered, the door was forced open, revealing the three lying lifeless inside their residence. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Zone 3, Raghav Jain, described the scene, stating, "They were found frothing at the mouth. We consulted forensic experts to determine the probable cause of death."
Investigation and Suspected Cause
Initial postmortem reports and forensic analysis point strongly toward asphyxiation due to a gas leak. DCP Jain explained, "The primary suspicion is asphyxiation due to a gas leak, as the air conditioner and geyser are located in the common area of the room, and our personnel experienced a suffocating sensation there. Forensic experts also believe this is the most likely cause of death." The police noted that the gas geyser was improperly installed in a room instead of an open area, which may have contributed to the leakage.
Forensic experts estimate that the victims likely died around 3 am, slowly inhaling the gas while asleep. All three were found in different rooms of the apartment, indicating the pervasive nature of the leak. While food poisoning was considered a less likely possibility, authorities are sending all related evidence, including blood samples, for further analysis to confirm the exact cause.
Family Background and Survivor
Faiz Ahmed Saiyed owned a chemical unit in Pandesara in partnership with his three brothers, adding a layer of tragedy to the incident as he was a local businessman. The family had returned to Surat only four days prior after performing the Umra pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, making their sudden deaths even more poignant. In a heartbreaking twist, their 13-year-old daughter survived the tragedy as she had gone to a relative's house for an overnight stay.
Legal and Community Response
The Lalgate police have registered an accidental death case and launched a thorough investigation into the incident. This tragedy highlights critical safety concerns regarding gas appliance installations in residential areas, prompting calls for increased awareness and preventive measures. The community in Surat is mourning the loss, with many expressing shock and sympathy for the surviving daughter and extended family.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge residents to ensure proper ventilation and professional installation of gas appliances to prevent similar incidents. This case serves as a stark reminder of the silent dangers that can lurk within homes, emphasizing the need for vigilance and safety checks.
