Surat Missing Teen Case: Three Friends Booked for Abduction After Three-Year Mystery
In a startling turn of events, the Puna police in Surat have registered a case against three friends of a teenager who went missing nearly three years ago, charging them with abduction and criminal conspiracy. The breakthrough came after a tip-off from one of the accused, but the fate of the 17-year-old boy remains shrouded in mystery, with no body or conclusive evidence recovered despite extensive searches.
Disappearance and Initial Assumptions
The teenager, a Class 8 dropout who had been working at a fruit shop, was last seen by his family on May 22, 2023. According to relatives, he had a history of leaving home after arguments, often staying away for days before returning, and had developed a habit of consuming gutka, which led to frequent reprimands over his behavior and studies. Initially, his family believed he had left in a similar manner and would come back, but as days turned into months, their hopes faded, and concern grew.
Breakthrough and Allegations
The case took a dramatic turn on January 25 of this year when one of the teen's friends, now 19 years old, contacted a friend of the boy's elder brother, claiming to have information about the disappearance. When the family met him, he alleged that two other friends—who were minors at the time of the incident—were involved. All three individuals were aged 15, 16, and 20 in 2023, and police investigations revealed that all four were last together on a ground.
Police Investigation and Searches
Inspector V M Desai of Puna police stated that the trio was questioned both individually and together. During the interrogation, suspicion arose that the missing boy might have been killed during a quarrel and buried near Rang Awdhoot Society. Acting on this lead, police dug up nearly 5,000 square feet of land at the indicated spot but found no remains. A nearby well was also searched based on claims from the accused that body parts were disposed of there, yet no evidence was recovered.
"As all three, including the one who gave the information, were present at the time, we have booked them for abduction and criminal conspiracy," Desai explained. He added that with no remains found, investigators will pursue other leads, including forensic and scientific (FSL) tests on the accused and examining records of unidentified bodies from that period.Motive and Accusations
Police sources indicate that the case surfaced after the 19-year-old friend allegedly decided to settle scores with the other two. He had a quarrel with them and, in a bid to expose their alleged role in the disappearance, disclosed details to the boy's brother. However, during the investigation, the other two told police that the 19-year-old was also present on the day the teenager went missing, leading to all three being charged.
Ongoing Mystery and Future Steps
Despite the charges, the central mystery persists: what happened to the teenager? With no physical evidence recovered, the investigation remains open, and police are exploring all possible angles. The case highlights the complexities of long-term missing person investigations and the challenges in uncovering the truth when key details are missing.
As the legal process unfolds, the family continues to seek answers, hoping for closure in a case that has haunted them for years. The Puna police have assured that they will leave no stone unturned in their efforts to solve this perplexing disappearance.
