Surat Police Issue Stern Warning to Gym Owners Over Trainer Harassment Allegations

In a significant move to address growing concerns over women's safety, the Surat city police on Monday convened a crucial meeting with approximately 100 gym owners and instructors. This action was prompted by multiple complaints alleging that some trainers were harassing female clients through unsolicited and often obscene messages.

Police Response to Verbal Complaints

The meeting was organized following verbal complaints directly submitted to the Police Commissioner and other senior officials. These complaints detailed instances where gym trainers reportedly sent inappropriate messages to women members, attempting to forge personal relationships beyond professional boundaries.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rajdeep Nakum emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating, "We received complaints that some trainers were sending inappropriate messages to women members and trying to develop personal relationships through gyms. We made it clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken if complaints are received."

Key Directives Issued During the Meeting

The interaction, held at Umra Hall, saw police officials issuing several critical directives to gym operators:

  • Strict prohibition of personal involvement: Trainers were explicitly warned against any personal engagement with clients.
  • Enhanced background verification: Gym owners were advised to conduct thorough background checks before hiring trainers.
  • Mandatory CCTV installation: Owners were instructed to install high-quality surveillance cameras covering all areas of their facilities.
  • Maintenance of discipline: Operators were told to ensure proper conduct and discipline within their premises.

Widespread Impact and Future Monitoring

DCP Nakum revealed that representatives from gyms across multiple areas including Vesu, Althan, Piplod, Adajan, Pal, Rander, and Athwalines attended the meeting. He highlighted the broader consequences of such misconduct, noting, "There have been instances where such conduct has resulted in serious family disputes and breakdown."

To ensure compliance and gather direct feedback, the Special Operations Group (SOG) teams will conduct visits to gyms throughout the city in the coming days. "Our teams will conduct visits and take reviews from gym members. Owners have been instructed to ensure proper surveillance and maintain discipline within their premises," the officer added.

This proactive measure by Surat police aims to create a safer environment for women in fitness centers, addressing both immediate complaints and implementing long-term preventive strategies through surveillance and accountability mechanisms.
