Teacher Held for Sending Student to Buy Liquor in Dry Gujarat

A teacher in Gujarat has been suspended and arrested for allegedly sending a student to buy liquor in the state, where the manufacture, sale, and consumption of alcohol are strictly prohibited. The incident occurred in a school in the Kutch district, according to police officials.

Details of the Incident

The teacher, identified as Ramesh Patel, a 45-year-old mathematics instructor at a government-run secondary school, reportedly asked a 16-year-old male student to purchase liquor from a nearby illicit vendor on July 9. The student was caught by local police during a routine patrol near the school premises, leading to the discovery of the teacher's involvement.

Legal Action and Suspension

The education department suspended Patel with immediate effect following the arrest. He has been booked under the Gujarat Prohibition Act, 1949, which imposes a complete ban on the manufacture, storage, sale, and consumption of alcoholic beverages. Police officials confirmed that Patel was produced before a local court on July 10 and remanded to judicial custody.

Impact on the Student and School

The student was handed over to his parents after counseling. School authorities have launched an internal inquiry and assured cooperation with the investigation. District Education Officer Meena Sharma stated, "Such behavior is unacceptable and tarnishes the reputation of the teaching community. We will ensure strict action as per rules."

Prohibition in Gujarat

Gujarat has been a dry state since its formation in 1960, following the principles of Mahatma Gandhi. Violations of the prohibition law can lead to imprisonment of up to 10 years and fines. Despite the ban, illegal liquor trade persists in some areas, prompting periodic crackdowns by law enforcement.
