Tragic Electrocution at Puri Ram Leela Performance Claims Teenager's Life
A festive Ram Leela performance in a Puri district village turned into a scene of tragedy late Saturday night when a 14-year-old spectator was electrocuted after a panic-induced flight from the stage. The incident has cast a pall over the community and raised urgent questions about public safety and infrastructure negligence.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The victim, identified as Subham Pradhan, was a Class VIII student from Parala village in the Krushnaprasad block near Chilika lake. He had traveled to neighboring Bhabanipur village to watch a Ram Leela performance organized to celebrate a newborn's naming ceremony. According to police reports, the tragedy unfolded when an actor portraying Lord Hanuman made a dramatic leap into the crowd as part of the theatrical performance.
"Subham panicked when the Hanuman actor jumped into the audience," explained Bichitrananda Pradhan, inspector in-charge of Krushnaprasad police station. "As the actor playfully chased him in character, the boy ran toward what he thought was safety but instead collided with an unfenced electric transformer."
The immediate electrocution proved fatal for the teenager, whose body was later transported in a pick-up van due to the absence of proper ambulance or hearse services in the remote Krushnaprasad block.
Police Investigation and Community Response
Local authorities have registered a case of unnatural death and launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. "We are examining whether negligence contributed to this unfortunate incident," Inspector Pradhan stated, confirming that the actor who portrayed Hanuman would be questioned as part of the inquiry.
The Ram Leela troupe had been specially invited from Nayagarh for the celebratory event, with approximately 50 to 60 spectators from surrounding villages gathered to watch the performance. Following the tragedy, community members have expressed outrage and demanded accountability from electricity authorities for failing to secure the hazardous transformer.
"We have directed the local electrical engineer to install proper fencing around the transformer immediately to prevent any recurrence of such incidents," Inspector Pradhan assured, acknowledging the community's safety concerns.
Broader Implications and Safety Concerns
This tragic incident highlights several critical issues:
- Infrastructure Safety: The absence of protective fencing around electrical transformers in public areas
- Emergency Services: The lack of adequate ambulance and transportation services in remote blocks
- Event Safety Protocols: The need for better crowd management and safety measures during public performances
- Accountability: Questions about responsibility when theatrical performances interact with audiences
The investigation continues as authorities work to determine whether proper safety protocols were followed during the Ram Leela performance and whether the electricity department bears responsibility for the unfenced transformer that claimed a young life during what should have been a celebratory community event.
