Tragic Expressway Crash Claims Teen's Life, Leaves Two Seriously Injured
A devastating early morning accident on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway has resulted in the death of a 15-year-old boy and left two others with severe injuries. The incident occurred near Shirgaon around 3 am on Wednesday, sending shockwaves through the local community and highlighting ongoing road safety concerns.
Details of the Fatal Collision
According to the Shirgaon police, the trio was traveling from Sangli to Mumbai when their car first collided with an unknown vehicle ahead before violently hitting a median. The impact was catastrophic, leading to immediate fatalities and critical injuries. Police Sub-Inspector Naid Shaikh provided crucial insights into the sequence of events, suggesting that driver fatigue may have played a significant role.
"Prima facie, the driver might have dozed off, causing the car to crash into an unknown vehicle before striking the divider," Shaikh stated, emphasizing the preliminary findings of the investigation. The tragic outcome underscores the dangers of long-distance driving during late hours, especially on high-speed expressways.
Victims Identified and Condition Updates
The Shirgaon police have officially identified the deceased as Darshan Shah, a 15-year-old resident of Sangli district. His cousin, Aditya Shah (30), who was behind the wheel at the time of the accident, sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Additionally, their family friend, Ashwesh Sawant (32) from Virar, Mumbai, also suffered severe harm in the crash.
Investigations reveal that Sawant had traveled to Sangli for work and planned to return to Mumbai on Tuesday. He joined the Shah brothers for the journey, with the group departing Sangli around 11 pm. They reached the Shirgaon area approximately four hours later, where the fatal accident unfolded. The 15-year-old boy died at the spot, while the injured were rushed for medical attention, as confirmed by authorities.
Ongoing Police Investigation and Broader Implications
Police Sub-Inspector Naid Shaikh assured that "our investigations were on," indicating a thorough probe into the exact causes and circumstances surrounding the crash. This incident adds to a growing list of accidents on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, raising urgent questions about road safety measures, driver awareness, and enforcement protocols.
As the community mourns the loss of young Darshan Shah, this tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the perils associated with nighttime driving and the critical need for preventive strategies. The Shirgaon police continue to gather evidence and statements to piece together the full narrative, with updates expected as the investigation progresses.
