Dehradun: A tragic incident unfolded in the Satpuli area of Pauri Garhwal district on Saturday morning, where a 19-year-old man was found hanging from a bridge with his helmet still on. The incident occurred shortly after police allegedly seized his motorcycle for being involved in a pedestrian hit-and-run case.
Background of the Incident
The deceased, identified as Pankaj Kumar, a resident of Raitpur village, had reportedly posted a suicide note on his social media account before taking the extreme step. In the note, he blamed local police for humiliating him and his family. Kumar's maternal uncle, Om Prakash, told TOI that Pankaj was deeply attached to his motorbike and often uploaded videos of himself riding it on social media. The last video included a suicide note accusing the police of humiliation at the station, where they had called his mother and uncle.
Sequence of Events
On Friday evening, Pankaj was returning home after visiting his recently married sister. During the journey, he was involved in an incident where his bike hit a pedestrian. Following this, police seized the motorcycle. The next morning, on Saturday, Pankaj left home without informing his family. When his mother went to the terrace to search for him, she saw his body hanging from a nearby bridge. The family is in shock, especially since Pankaj's father had passed away a few years ago.
Police Version
Pauri Garhwal SSP Sarvesh Panwar stated that Pankaj was found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, which was confirmed by medical tests. As per legal norms, his bike was seized, and his mother and uncle were called to the police station before he was allowed to go with them. The SSP also revealed that Pankaj had previously attempted suicide by slashing his wrists. Authorities are awaiting postmortem findings and have assured a thorough investigation into the case.
