Kamarhati Chairman Resigns Amid Mass Councillor Exits

Kolkata: Mass resignations by councillors in civic bodies across the northern suburbs and Barrackpore industrial belt continued on Friday, with the chairman and a councillor of Kamarhati Municipality joining the trend. Kamarhati Municipality chairman Gopal Saha and councillor Shyamal Chakraborty have tendered their resignations from their respective posts.

Chairman Resigns Citing Health Issues

According to sources, Saha submitted his resignation letter to Kamarhati Municipality executive officer Suresh Chandra Hira, citing health issues. The development adds to the growing list of elected representatives stepping down in the region, which includes municipalities such as North Dum Dum, Titagarh, North Barrackpore, New Barrackpore, Bhatpara, Kanchrapara, Halisahar, and Garulia.

Councillor Takes Moral Responsibility

In a parallel development, Shyamal Chakraborty, councillor of a ward and a chairman-in-council (CIC) member (health), also submitted his resignation to the executive officer on Friday. With these submissions, two elected representatives of the municipality have formally resigned from their responsibilities. Chakraborty cited moral responsibility for his party’s electoral defeat as the reason for his resignation.

Administrative Procedures to Follow

Executive officer Hira confirmed the resignations, stating, “The chairman has resigned citing physical illness. At the same time, CIC member Shyamal Chakraborty has submitted his resignation, taking moral responsibility for his party’s electoral defeat. The affairs of the municipality will now be conducted in accordance with the prescribed administrative rules and procedures.”

This wave of resignations is seen as a significant political development in the region, with implications for local governance. The municipalities affected are key areas in the northern suburbs and the Barrackpore industrial belt, and the mass exodus of councillors raises questions about the stability of civic bodies in the region.
