Telangana Advocates Protest for Local Judge Elevations

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court Advocates' Association held a protest at the high court on Wednesday, demanding that only practising advocates of Telangana origin be considered for elevation as judges to the Telangana high court. They called for adherence to social justice norms and proper representation for all sections.

Protest Details

Over 100 advocates from the association, led by president S Surender Reddy, staged the protest during the lunch break. They held placards and raised slogans. Key participants included association secretary K Niranjan Reddy, vice-president DL Pandu, joint secretary Pulipalupula Krishna Keerthana, cultural secretary K Vishnuvardhan, treasurer Banoth Balaji, and senior counsels Gandra Mohan Rao, V Raghunath, Sharath Kumar, B Rachna Reddy, and Chikkudu Prabhakar, among others.

Background of the Protest

The protest continued a unanimous resolution passed by the association on June 15. That resolution requested the Supreme Court and high court collegiums, the President of India, and the Union law ministry to prioritize Telangana-origin advocates for elevation to the bench.

Members alleged that even after the formation of a separate Telangana high court, advocates of Andhra Pradesh origin are still being elevated as judges. They claimed this denies opportunities to advocates of Telangana origin to serve as judges.
