Telangana HC Adjourns DGP Appointment Petition to April 30

The Telangana High Court on Tuesday adjourned to April 30 a petition seeking the appointment of a full-time Director General of Police (Head of Police Force) for the Telangana police. The bench of Justice B Vijaysen Reddy heard the matter, where the petitioner, T Dhangopal Rao, argued that the state government was deliberately delaying the appointment despite a clear direction from the Supreme Court.

Petitioner's Contentions

During the hearing, the petitioner submitted that the state government was not complying with the Supreme Court's directive to appoint a permanent DGP. He urged the court to intervene and ensure that the appointment process is completed without further delay.

State's Response

Advocate General A Sudarshan Reddy, representing the state, opposed the petitioner's contentions. He informed the court that the present petition may not be taken up in view of the Supreme Court order and also a contempt case filed by the petitioner in the apex court. Seeking time, the advocate general noted that the file for the appointment process was before the government for selection and appointment of one of the empanelled IPS officers as DGP. This information was earlier conveyed during the previous hearing on April 13.

Court's Order

Recording the submissions, Justice B Vijaysen Reddy posted the matter to April 30 for further hearing. The court did not pass any interim order on the petition.

Background

The petition was filed by T Dhangopal Rao, who argued that the absence of a full-time DGP is affecting the functioning and accountability of the Telangana police. The Supreme Court had earlier directed all states to appoint a DGP with a minimum tenure of two years, and the petitioner claimed that Telangana was not complying with this order.

The matter will now be heard on April 30, where the court may decide on the next steps regarding the appointment of a full-time DGP for the state.
