Dangerous Building Slab Collapse Injures Elderly Woman in Thane

A 75-year-old woman sustained minor injuries on Thursday when the slab of a flat collapsed in a three-storey building that had already been declared dangerous by authorities in Thane city. The incident prompted the Thane Municipal Corporation to immediately evacuate the entire residential structure, highlighting ongoing concerns about unsafe buildings in the region.

Details of the Collapse Incident

The structural failure occurred around 4 pm in the Velankani building, a 30 to 35-year-old structure located near Fatima Church in Majiwada village. According to Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Disaster Management Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation, the slab of Room No. 103 on the first floor, owned by Vivek Kavilkar, came crashing down without warning.

The elderly resident, identified as Kirti Kavilkar, sustained minor injuries in the collapse and received immediate medical attention. Fortunately, her injuries were not severe, but the incident served as a stark reminder of the precarious condition of the building.

Building Already Classified as Dangerous

What makes this incident particularly alarming is that the building had already been officially classified under the 'C2A' category by municipal authorities. This classification indicates that a structure is dangerous, requires urgent major structural repairs, and is likely to require evacuation of residents.

The Velankani building consists of 12 flats and housed approximately 40 to 45 residents before the evacuation. Assistant Municipal Commissioner Sonal Kale confirmed that the building was served a notice on Thursday, just before the slab collapse occurred, underscoring the timely nature of the warning.

Immediate Evacuation and Shelter Arrangements

Following the slab collapse, authorities took decisive action to ensure resident safety. The entire building has been completely evacuated as the remaining portion is in a highly dangerous condition, according to Tadvi. The structural integrity of the entire building was deemed compromised following the partial collapse.

While some residents made their own arrangements for temporary accommodation, 12 to 15 people have been shifted to the TMC School No. 47 in Majiwada for temporary shelter. The municipal corporation is providing necessary support to displaced residents as they seek alternative housing options.

Broader Implications for Building Safety

This incident raises serious questions about building safety protocols and enforcement mechanisms in Thane and similar urban areas. The fact that a building already classified as dangerous experienced a structural failure before complete evacuation could be arranged highlights the urgent need for more proactive measures.

Municipal authorities are now likely to intensify inspections of other buildings with similar classifications to prevent such incidents in the future. The Thane Municipal Corporation's Disaster Management Cell will continue monitoring the situation and providing assistance to affected residents while assessing the structural damage more thoroughly.
