Thane Police Crack Down on Illegal Pharmaceutical Trade with Arrest in Rabodi
In a significant operation targeting the illicit drug trade, the Thane Crime Branch's anti-extortion cell has apprehended a 26-year-old man for allegedly possessing and attempting to sell codeine-based cough syrup without authorization in the Rabodi area of Thane (West). The arrest underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the misuse of regulated pharmaceutical substances in the region.
Police Action Based on Tip-Off Leads to Arrest
The enforcement action was executed on March 24 following a credible tip-off received by police personnel. Intelligence indicated that a suspect would be arriving near a bridge on Saket Road with a stock of prohibited pharmaceutical substances. Acting swiftly on this information, a specialized team from the anti-extortion cell laid a trap at the designated location and successfully apprehended the accused as he arrived.
Details of the Accused and Seized Contraband
The accused has been identified as Mohammad Sarfaraz Ismail Sayyed, a native of Uttar Pradesh. During the arrest, he was found carrying a bag containing 120 bottles of Anrex cough syrup, each with a 100 ml capacity. This syrup contains codeine phosphate and triprolidine, substances that are strictly regulated under Indian law due to their high potential for misuse and addiction. Police officials confirmed that the accused did not possess any valid licence or documentation for storing or selling these medicines, making the possession illegal.
Additional items seized during the operation included a mobile phone and other related materials. The total value of the recovered items has been estimated at Rs 35,835, highlighting the financial scale of the illicit activity. Authorities have emphasized that such operations are crucial in disrupting supply chains that fuel substance abuse.
Legal Proceedings and Case Registration
Following the arrest, a formal case has been registered at the Rabodi police station under relevant sections of the law pertaining to drug possession and trafficking without proper authorization. This incident serves as a reminder of the stringent measures in place to curb the illegal trade of pharmaceuticals, which often involves substances that can have severe health and social consequences when misused.
Police officials have reiterated their commitment to continuing such crackdowns based on intelligence and public cooperation. The arrest in Rabodi is part of broader initiatives to safeguard communities from the dangers associated with unregulated drug distribution, ensuring that legal frameworks are upheld to protect public health and safety.
