Theft Accused Admitted to ICU with Internal Injuries After Custody
A theft accused was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital (MCH) with serious internal injuries shortly after being remanded in judicial custody. This incident has sparked significant concern and led to an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP)-level probe into the circumstances surrounding the injuries.
Case Background and Arrests
The case revolves around the theft of a Yamaha RX 135 motorcycle, which was reportedly stolen from the parking area of Rajadhani Bar in Fort between February 11 and 16. In connection with this theft, Jinu Baby of Kottayam was traced to Kochi and taken into custody by Kochi police. He was subsequently handed over to Fort police on February 20. Another accused, Unni of Thiruvananthapuram, was arrested later by Fort police.
Allegations of Custodial Assault
Jinu Baby has alleged that he was assaulted while in police custody during transit from Kochi to Thiruvananthapuram. Both accused were produced before court and remanded in judicial custody on Saturday. However, Poojappura jail authorities reported that Baby had visible injuries when he was brought to the jail, prompting an immediate referral for medical examination at the general hospital. He was later shifted to MCH and is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU, suffering from internal injuries, including kidney-related complications.
Unni was also admitted to MCH later and is currently receiving treatment. Sources indicate that the statements of both accused regarding the alleged assault were recorded before a magistrate.
Police Response and Investigation
Police sources have maintained that the accused underwent medical examinations prior to being produced before court. The Fort police personnel involved in the custody process have denied the assault allegations. "We are examining the custody timeline to determine whether the injuries were sustained while in custody," a police official stated. The ACP-level probe aims to thoroughly investigate these claims and ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
