Three Arrested After Police Encounter Over Alleged Cow Slaughter in Meerut

Police in Meerut have arrested three individuals in connection with an alleged case of cow slaughter, officials confirmed on Monday. The arrests followed a dramatic encounter in the Sardhana area on Sunday night, where authorities recovered approximately one quintal of beef and a cow from the suspects' possession.

Encounter and Arrest Details

According to police reports, a patrol team acted on a specific tip-off regarding suspected cow slaughter activities in a forested area near Nagla Order village along the Ganga Canal. When officers arrived at the location and attempted to detain the suspects, the accused allegedly opened fire on the police personnel.

In what authorities described as an act of self-defence, police returned fire during the confrontation. One of the accused, identified as Monish, sustained injuries in the exchange and was subsequently transported to a community health centre for medical treatment.

Two additional suspects, Dilshad alias Dillu and Sartaj alias Dhamaka, were taken into custody at the scene. However, police confirmed that several other individuals managed to escape during the chaotic incident. A comprehensive search operation is currently underway to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects.

Evidence and Seizures

From the crime scene, authorities confiscated substantial evidence including illegal firearms, multiple cartridges, various tools allegedly used in the slaughter process, and a vehicle. The recovery of approximately one quintal of beef and a cow provided crucial physical evidence supporting the allegations against the arrested individuals.

Legal Proceedings

Police have registered a formal case under multiple legal provisions including relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Arms Act, and the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act. The combination of charges reflects the serious nature of the alleged offences, encompassing both violence against law enforcement and violations of animal protection statutes.

Investigators are continuing their efforts to gather additional evidence and build a comprehensive case against all individuals involved in the incident. The ongoing investigation aims to establish the complete chain of events and identify any potential accomplices or networks connected to the alleged slaughter operation.

Broader Context

This incident occurs within the framework of Uttar Pradesh's strict laws prohibiting cow slaughter, which have been vigorously enforced in recent years. The state's Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act carries significant penalties for violations, reflecting the cultural and religious sensitivities surrounding cattle protection in the region.

Police officials emphasized their commitment to enforcing these laws while maintaining public safety. The encounter highlights the challenges law enforcement faces when confronting potentially armed groups engaged in illegal activities, particularly in remote or forested areas where such operations sometimes occur.

Authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to illegal slaughter or animal cruelty, emphasizing community cooperation as essential for effective law enforcement. The case continues to develop as investigators pursue additional leads and work to bring all responsible parties to justice.
