Three additional suspects have been arrested in connection with the lynching of a man in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, following the discovery of an 11-year-old girl's body in a pond. The arrests bring the total number of detainees to five, police officials confirmed on Saturday.
Background of the Incident
The minor girl went missing on July 4 after she left her home in Baruipur to purchase a birthday gift for a friend. Her body was found in a local pond later that day, sparking outrage in the community. Preliminary investigations indicated she had been sexually assaulted before being killed.
Following the discovery, a mob allegedly lynched a man suspected of involvement in the crime. Police have not disclosed the identity of the lynching victim but stated that he was a local resident.
Arrests and Investigation
Initially, two individuals were arrested on charges of murder and rape. The three new arrests are specifically for the lynching, according to a senior police officer. "We have taken three more people into custody for their alleged role in the mob lynching. They are being interrogated to ascertain the sequence of events," the officer said.
Police have registered separate cases for the rape and murder of the girl and the lynching. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities collecting forensic evidence and recording statements from witnesses.
