In a significant crackdown on narcotics trade, the Chainpur police in Palamu district have successfully apprehended three young individuals and confiscated a substantial quantity of brown sugar. The operation, which unfolded in the Samar Tarn locality of Daltonganj on Wednesday, led to the recovery of 29.24 grams of the illegal drug, meticulously packed into 69 handmade sachets.
Details of the Police Raid and Arrests
The action was set into motion after the police received specific intelligence regarding the sale and purchase of drugs in the area. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, Palamu Superintendent of Police Reeshma Ramesan constituted a dedicated team to conduct a raid. The team was spearheaded by DSP on probation, Rajiv Ranjan, and included Inspector Deobrat Poddar and the local police station officer in-charge, Sriram Sharma, among other officers.
The raid resulted in the arrest of the three accused, who have been identified as Manish Kumar, Harshit Raj, and Badal Kumar. All three are in their twenties. According to police sources, Manish Kumar is reported to have a prior criminal background. Officer Sriram Sharma revealed that while these three were captured, three more of their accomplices managed to escape from the scene. The police are continuing their efforts to track them down.
Judicial Custody and Charges Filed
The arrested youths were presented before a court and have been sent to judicial custody as of Thursday. The police have registered a case against them under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which carries stringent penalties. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the broader network and source of the narcotics.
Sources indicated that the small sachets were being sold at a street price of approximately Rs 500 per sachet, highlighting the lucrative and dangerous nature of the trade that the police have disrupted.
