Three Lives Lost in Haridwar-Laksar Highway Collision
A tragic head-on collision on the Haridwar-Laksar highway resulted in three fatalities and four injuries on Sunday morning. The accident involved a car and an electric tri-wheeler, with initial police investigations pointing to overspeeding by both vehicles as the likely cause.
Details of the Fatal Crash
The car carried two passengers and was traveling from Haridwar. Meanwhile, the electric tri-wheeler had five occupants and was coming from Laksar. Police teams quickly arrived at the scene and rescued all seven individuals. They transported them to the district hospital for urgent medical attention.
Doctors at the hospital declared three people dead upon arrival. The remaining four victims sustained injuries and required admission for treatment. All four injured persons are now reported to be out of danger.
Victims Identified in the Haridwar Accident
Authorities have identified the three deceased individuals. Vikas Kumar, aged 26 and a resident of Ferupur, was driving the car. Aas Mohammad, 24 years old from Laksar, operated the electric vehicle. Charan Singh, 55 and also from Laksar, was traveling as a passenger in the tri-wheeler.
After completing post-mortem examinations, officials handed over the bodies to their respective family members. Police note that no formal complaint has been registered yet, as neither party involved has lodged one.
Background of the Victims and the Highway
SHO Manoj Nautiyal from the Pathri police station provided additional context. Vikas Kumar worked as a car body maker and was returning from a salon with a friend at the time of the crash. Charan Singh had visited Laksar to celebrate a relative securing a government job and was returning home via the e-vehicle.
The Haridwar-Laksar highway serves as a crucial route for daily commuters, freight vehicles, and public transport. It connects Haridwar with parts of Roorkee and the plains of western Uttarakhand.
Community Concerns Over Road Safety
Haridwar-based social activist Abhishek Sharma voiced serious concerns about the highway's safety record. He described it as one of the most unsafe stretches in the district, highlighting the absence of a divider and several danger zones prone to frequent accidents.
"Despite repeated complaints from residents and activists, the authorities have shown little interest in addressing these persistent problems," Sharma stated.
He referenced recent fatal incidents on the same route to underscore the urgency of the issue. In one case, two brothers died while traveling to a passport office for verification before going abroad for work. A dumper ran them over. Another accident claimed the life of a local trader when a small loader hit his car as he returned home with his family from a function. His wife and child sustained injuries in that collision.
These incidents collectively point to a pressing need for improved safety measures on the Haridwar-Laksar highway to prevent further loss of life.
