Trans Activists Stage Protest in Hyderabad Against Proposed Amendment Bill

Trans rights activists have organized a significant demonstration in Hyderabad, vehemently opposing the proposed Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) amendment bill of 2026. The protest, held at Dharna Chowk on Sunday, called for the immediate withdrawal of the bill, which participants labeled as "completely inhumane." The activists raised powerful slogans such as "Our Body - Our Rights" to emphasize their demands for dignity, identity, and fundamental rights.

Key Demands of the Protesters

The protesters have put forth several critical demands. Firstly, they insist on explicit recognition of transmen in all existing laws to ensure their legal protection and equality. Additionally, they demand the complete removal of medical board involvement in issuing transgender certificates, arguing that this process violates personal autonomy.

Advocate G Kiran Raj highlighted that gender identity is a deeply personal and natural feeling, not influenced by external factors. He strongly condemned the requirement for medical examinations, stating it undermines self-determination.

Criticism of Medical Board Involvement

Activist Surya Raj Yadav echoed these sentiments, asserting that forcing individuals to undergo medical validation for their gender identity is a direct violation of dignity, privacy, and the right to self-identification. Yadav emphasized that gender identity should be based solely on self-identification, without any medical interference.

The protest also saw participation from members of the Queer Bandhu Parents Association, showing broader community support. In a stern warning, the activists declared that if their rights are not acknowledged, they will escalate their actions by laying siege to secretariats across the country.

This demonstration underscores ongoing tensions over transgender rights legislation in India, with activists pushing for more inclusive and humane policies.
