A violent clash erupted between two transgender groups in Bhadrak town of Balasore district on Tuesday, leaving four individuals injured and sparking tense protests at the local police station.
Attack During Routine Errand
The incident occurred near the Charampa area. According to initial reports, members of one transgender group were returning home after purchasing vegetables when they were allegedly ambushed by a rival group. The attackers were armed with sharp weapons.
The assault resulted in serious injuries to the victims, with wounds reported on their heads, backs, ears, and other body parts.
Assault, Hair-Cutting, and Robbery Alleged
In complaints filed with the police, the victims alleged that the attack went beyond physical assault. They claimed the assailants forcibly cut their hair. Furthermore, the attackers allegedly looted Rs 10,000 in cash and a mobile phone from them.
Protest and Police Response
Following the incident, a large number of transgender community members gathered at the Bhadrak Town police station. They staged a demonstration on the premises, raising slogans and demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible for the attack, which led to a tense atmosphere.
Addressing the situation, Prabhanshu Mishra, the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Bhadrak Town police station, stated, “Three persons have been detained for questioning. Statements of the injured have been recorded.”
Police sources indicated that the violence appears to be linked to a long-standing rivalry between the two groups. The groups are reportedly led by Sanjana Shashmal and Jharanarani.
