Trichy: Man Arrested for Impersonating Police Constable in Motorcycle Auction Scam

A 25-year-old man from Ramanathapuram district was arrested in Trichy on Wednesday for impersonating a police constable and cheating a youth by falsely promising to secure a motorcycle through a police auction. The accused, identified as S Sam of Pamban, had recently arrived in Trichy in search of employment opportunities.

How the Scam Unfolded

Sam befriended A Mohamed Kaif, a 20-year-old who works at a mobile shop near the Chathiram Bus Stand and resides in Edamalaipatti Pudur. Posing as a constable in the Armed Reserve Police, Sam gradually gained Kaif's trust. Initially, he borrowed Rs 1,000 from Kaif, claiming he could not use digital payment methods due to a damaged mobile phone.

On March 23, Sam escalated the deception by informing Kaif that the police department was conducting a vehicle auction. He offered to assist Kaif in purchasing a two-wheeler through this auction, presenting it as a lucrative opportunity. Sam collected another Rs 1,000 as an advance payment for the supposed motorcycle deal.

Investigation and Arrest

After Sam failed to arrange the vehicle or return the money, Kaif grew suspicious and lodged a formal complaint with the police. Authorities conducted a thorough investigation, which confirmed that Sam was indeed impersonating a police constable and had no connection to any legitimate police auction.

A case was registered at the Edamalaipatti Pudur Crime police station under Sections 205 and 318 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertain to impersonation and cheating. Following the registration of the case, Sam was promptly arrested, produced before a magistrate, and remanded in judicial custody.
