According to police reports, the suspect, identified as S Hariharan, hails from Chidambaram in Cuddalore district. He had recently completed his civil engineering degree from Annamalai University and had a brief stint working in Chennai. The incident occurred when Hariharan, who was visiting relatives at Rajiv Gandhi Nagar with his family, wandered into the home of 67-year-old Ragunathan, a retired college professor. The house is located in Vasan Valley, just a few blocks away from his relative's residence. Mistaking Hariharan for a robber, Ragunathan confronted him, leading to a physical altercation.
During the scuffle, Hariharan allegedly grabbed a pair of scissors and slashed Ragunathan across his body. The professor's wife, 60-year-old Suguma, screamed for help, alerting neighbours who rushed to the scene. The locals managed to catch the intruder, beat him up, and bound him with his own shirt before informing the Somarasampettai police.

Meanwhile, Hariharan's father, Sivakumar, who is an engineer, received a call from residents informing him about his son's situation.
