TRICHY: The KK Nagar police in Trichy city have arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly attempting to murder a woman at the Racecourse road walking track near the district sports complex in Khajamalai. The accused, identified as Viyakula Naveen, a native of Salai village in Sivaganga district, was in a relationship with the victim, Amala Verginia, also 22. Police stated that Naveen had been pressurizing Amala for marriage, but she delayed the proposal as her parents did not consent.
Details of the Incident
Amala Verginia, a native of Mudukulathur in Ramanathapuram district, has been pursuing an MBA through a distance education program. She had been in a relationship with Naveen for the past two years. Naveen works at a real estate firm in Thillai Nagar, Trichy. According to police, Naveen persistently asked Amala to marry him, but she repeatedly delayed the decision due to her parents' objection, which she communicated to him.
On Sunday evening, the duo met at the Racecourse road walking track, adjacent to the Khajamalai district sports complex. An argument broke out between them, during which Naveen allegedly verbally abused Amala, strangled her with her own shawl, and assaulted her with a stone. The victim sustained severe head injuries and was left lying on the walking track, an area that also hosts official quarters of senior police officers.

The assault was captured by onlookers on their mobile phones, and the video quickly went viral on social media platforms, sparking widespread concern over women's safety. Acting on the information, the KK Nagar police registered a case under sections BNS 109 (attempt to murder), 296 (b) (abusing in obscene language), and Section 4 of the Woman Harassment Act. Naveen was arrested and subsequently remanded in judicial custody.
