Trichy Police Deploy Green Sunshade Nets at Traffic Signals to Alleviate Extreme Heat

In response to soaring temperatures, the Trichy police have initiated the installation of green sunshade nets near traffic signals across the city. This proactive measure is designed to offer temporary respite to bike riders who experience significant discomfort due to the intense heat while waiting at signals. As mercury levels climb, with the city recording temperatures of 38°C or higher in recent days, the need for such interventions has become increasingly urgent.

Expanding Coverage to Enhance Commuter Safety

Historically, similar nets were positioned at key locations including Puthur Four Road, the head post office, Palpannai, and TVS Tollgate. This year, the police are planning to broaden the coverage to include additional spots such as near Panjapur. Police Commissioner N Kamini emphasized that the installation process has just commenced, with further expansions contingent on fund availability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) support. The nets are expected to remain in place for approximately three to four months, providing sustained relief during the hottest period.

Addressing Health Risks and Promoting Traffic Compliance

The escalating heat poses serious health risks, including dehydration, fatigue, and other heat-related ailments, particularly for commuters during peak traffic hours. Beyond offering immediate relief from the scorching sun, the green nets are also anticipated to encourage better adherence to traffic rules. By reducing the discomfort associated with prolonged exposure to heat, riders are more likely to wait patiently at signals, thereby enhancing overall road safety.

Positive Reception from the Community

Commuters have warmly welcomed this initiative, describing it as a small yet meaningful improvement that significantly enhances their daily travel experience. K Murali, a rider from Thillai Nagar, expressed his support, stating, "Such nets should be installed at all traffic signals on both sides of the road across the city. They will make travel safer and more bearable through the bustling roads." This feedback underscores the community's appreciation for efforts that prioritize public well-being amidst challenging environmental conditions.

The Trichy police's deployment of green sunshade nets represents a thoughtful response to the adverse effects of rising temperatures, demonstrating a commitment to safeguarding commuter health and promoting safer traffic practices in the city.
