Trichy has witnessed a remarkable drop in thefts targeting passengers on trains and at railway stations. According to an official release, reported cases in the Trichy division fell by more than half. The numbers show a sharp decline from 133 incidents in 2024 to just 61 in 2025.
Arrests and Enforcement Efforts
Arrests related to these thefts also decreased. In 2024, authorities made 74 arrests. This figure dropped to 54 in 2025. Officials attribute the overall reduction to a combination of sustained enforcement and increased vigilance.
Response to the 2024 Surge
The year 2024 saw a surge in theft cases. This prompted immediate action from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP). Both forces intensified their surveillance efforts at stations and onboard trains.
Officers and staff conducted targeted interventions during the most vulnerable hours. They focused particularly on the period between 6 PM and 11 PM.
Special Safety Operations
The RPF undertook several key initiatives in coordination with the GRP. These included escorting duties and special operations designed to enhance passenger safety.
- Yatri Suraksha: This operation was launched specifically for passenger security.
- Operation Amanat: Focused on the recovery of lost property.
- Operation Rail Suraksha: Aimed at taking direct action against offenders.
Preventive Measures and Awareness
A multi-pronged approach was adopted to prevent thefts and educate passengers.
Awareness posters and banners were displayed at major stations and inside train coaches. QR codes were provided, linking passengers to videos on theft prevention. Another QR-based system was enabled to help trace stolen mobile phones.
To deter repeat offenders, photographs of habitual criminals were displayed prominently in station areas.
Additional Security Steps
Several other practical measures were implemented:
- Sealing luggage zips with cello tape during night hours.
- Enforcing strict police verification for all outsourced staff.
- Switching off charging points in AC coaches between 11 PM and 5 AM.
Enhanced Passenger Support
Recently, an RPF assistance kiosk was installed at Srirangam station. This kiosk is designed to help passengers resolve grievances quickly and efficiently.
The concerted efforts by the RPF and GRP, combined with greater passenger awareness, have created a safer travel environment in the Trichy railway division.
