In a disturbing incident at Government Arts College in Thuvakudi, Trichy district, a 19-year-old college student has been arrested for assaulting a female student and her brother. The accused, identified as B Kirubakaran, a second-year undergraduate student, was taken into custody following a formal complaint and subsequent police investigation.

Dispute Over Dropped Mobile Phone Escalates

According to police sources, the incident originated on March 9 when Kirubakaran accidentally knocked a mobile phone from the hand of a first-year undergraduate female student. The phone fell to the ground, sparking a verbal argument between the two students. The female student later informed her brother, who is also studying at the same college, about the altercation.

The brother confronted Kirubakaran regarding the incident. Following this confrontation, Kirubakaran reportedly issued threats to the brother over the phone, further escalating the tension between the parties involved.

Assault and Viral Video

The situation reached a critical point on Wednesday around noon when Kirubakaran confronted the siblings on the college premises. He verbally abused them for having reported the initial dispute to the police, leading to a heated altercation. In a fit of rage, Kirubakaran physically assaulted both the female student and her brother.

A video of the assault quickly went viral on social media platforms, drawing widespread attention to the incident. The injured female student was admitted to Trichy Government Hospital for medical treatment. Based on her detailed statement, a formal case was registered at the Thuvakudi police station on Thursday.

Arrest and Judicial Custody

Following the registration of the case, Kirubakaran was arrested by the police. He was subsequently produced before a magistrate, who remanded him in judicial custody. The legal proceedings are now underway as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault.

Police Clarification on Ragging Rumors

Meanwhile, Trichy district police have issued a clarification regarding the incident. They emphasized that the assault arose directly from the argument following the accidental knocking of the complainant's mobile phone. Contrary to reports by some sections of the media, the police confirmed that the incident was not related to ragging in any form.
