Two Men Arrested in Kochi After Car Rams Police Officer During Inspection
In a shocking incident in Kochi, city police have arrested two individuals following a deliberate car ramming that targeted a police officer during a routine inspection. The event unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday, leading to injuries and a swift police investigation.
Details of the Arrest and Incident
The accused have been identified as Shamnad, aged 23, and Irshad, aged 27, both residents of Kollam. They were taken into custody by noon on Thursday in Kollam after authorities meticulously reviewed CCTV footage along their escape route. The arrest came after an intense manhunt triggered by the alarming incident.
The confrontation occurred around 2:30 AM on Wednesday on Sastha Road in the Kaloor area of Kochi. According to police reports, three officers were conducting an inspection when they noticed a car entering the junction from a pocket road. Two policemen approached the vehicle from the right side, while Assistant Sub-Inspector N P Santhosh positioned himself on the opposite side of the road.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Attack
Initially, the vehicle slowed down, prompting Santhosh and another officer to move in front of it to conduct the inspection. However, in a sudden and reckless move, the driver steered the car directly towards Santhosh. The impact hit the officer, throwing him onto the bonnet of the vehicle before he was flung to the right side of the road.
Miraculously, Santhosh had a narrow escape as he fell onto the road just seconds after a two-wheeler passed by the spot. "The officer sustained injuries to his thigh muscles and elbow. Had he fallen in front of the bike, the injuries could have been more serious," a police officer stated, highlighting the perilous nature of the incident.
Investigation and Findings
After striking the officer, the car did not stop and was driven away from the scene. During questioning, the accused admitted to being under the influence of alcohol at the time, which they claimed led to their reckless behavior and failure to stop for the police inspection.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that Shamnad was driving the car, with Irshad occupying the front passenger seat. The vehicle is registered under the name of Sakkeer Hussain, a Kollam native and acquaintance of the accused, who was not present in the car during the incident. Police noted that the accused had come to Kochi on a casual trip, adding context to their presence in the city.
Further investigations are currently underway to determine if the individuals are involved in any other criminal cases. The police are continuing to comb through evidence and witness statements to ensure a thorough probe into this serious offense.
