Two Brothers Get 10 Years for Assault, Robbery in Coimbatore

A special court in Coimbatore has sentenced two brothers to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for assaulting an elderly man and snatching his mobile phone. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on the convicts, identified as C Sanjay Nishanth, 24, and his brother C Sujith Kumar, 22, both residents of Tirupur.

Incident Details

The victim, Krishnamoorthy, 55, a powerloom owner residing in Semmandampalayam in Coimbatore district, was riding his motorcycle on Thekkalur Road on August 24, 2024. He stopped near the Kamanaickenpalayam-Semmandampalayam junction to attend a phone call. At that moment, two young men and a minor boy, riding triple on a motorcycle, approached him under the pretext of asking for directions. Noticing that the area was isolated, the trio assaulted Krishnamoorthy, snatched his mobile phone, and fled the scene.

Legal Proceedings

Krishnamoorthy lodged a complaint with the Karumathampatti police, who registered a case and arrested the accused. Judge R Gokul Murugan pronounced the verdict on Wednesday. Public prosecutor K Karthikeyan represented the prosecution. The court sentenced the two adult brothers to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 each. The minor involved in the crime was dealt with separately under juvenile justice laws.
