Two Separate Bus Accidents in Trichy Result in Fatalities
In a tragic series of events on Sunday, two individuals lost their lives in separate accidents involving buses in Trichy. The incidents, which occurred at different locations and times, have highlighted ongoing road safety concerns in the region.
Motorcyclist Struck by Government Bus
The first victim was identified as Ranjith Kumar, a 39-year-old resident of Maruthagudi near Thiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district. According to police reports, Kumar was riding his motorcycle along the Pudukkottai-Trichy Road. As he approached the jail corner junction, a government bus traveling from Pudukkottai to Trichy collided with him from behind.
The impact of the collision was severe, causing Kumar to sustain critical injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities. The bus driver involved in this accident was M Murugaraju, a 52-year-old from Komboothi in Ramanathapuram district.
Pedestrian Hit by Private City Bus
In a separate incident later that evening, I Chandramoorthy, a 58-year-old from Kulathur in Pudukkottai district, was fatally struck by a private city bus. Chandramoorthy was walking towards the Old Central bus stand around 8 PM when the bus, which was entering the bus stand, hit him.
Chandramoorthy suffered serious injuries in the accident and was immediately rushed to Trichy Government Hospital (GH). Unfortunately, doctors declared him dead upon arrival. The driver of the private bus was identified as G Balakrishnan, a 30-year-old from Melakalkandarkottai.
Legal Actions and Investigations
Following the accidents, traffic police registered separate cases against the bus drivers based on formal complaints filed by the victims' family members. Ranjith Kumar's wife, Boomalini, and Chandramoorthy's son, Veeramanikandan, provided statements that led to the legal proceedings.
Both drivers have been booked under sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for charges including rash driving and causing death by negligence. In response to these incidents, the authorities have seized both buses involved in the accidents as part of the ongoing investigation.
Aftermath and Procedures
The bodies of both victims were handed over to their respective family members after autopsies were conducted at the hospital. This step is standard procedure in such cases to determine the exact cause of death and gather forensic evidence.
These tragic events have sparked discussions about road safety measures and driver accountability in Trichy. Local authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution, especially in high-traffic areas, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
