Two Held for Extortion in Ludhiana; Journalist and Social Activist Among Accused
The Sudhar police have taken swift action by arresting two individuals, including a social activist and a journalist, on charges of extortion in a case that has sent shockwaves through the local community. A third suspect, identified as a panchayat member, remains absconding, with authorities intensifying efforts to apprehend him.
Details of the Case and Arrests
According to police officials, led by Manohar Lal, the key suspect has been identified as Deepu, a resident of Akalgarh village, who is known as a social activist and whistle-blower against drug peddling. Alongside him, one of the arrested individuals is a journalist, while the third suspect, also a journalist, is currently evading capture. The FIR, registered based on the statement of Raghbir Singh from South City, Ludhiana, alleges that the suspects threatened Sikandar Singh, a close relative of the complainant, demanding a hefty sum of Rs 5-7 lakh.
The extortion demand was linked to a serious accusation of physically and mentally harassing a minor migrant girl. The complainant has provided an audio recording as evidence, which purportedly captures a conversation between him and Deepu, where the latter is heard demanding money on behalf of himself and his companions.
Denials and Police Investigation
In a twist, the two journalists who have been arrested have vehemently denied the charges, claiming they have been falsely implicated in the case. They argue that their involvement is being misrepresented, though police have not yet commented on these assertions. SHO Gurdeep Singh confirmed that Deepu and one journalist are in custody, while the search for the third suspect continues.
The case highlights the complex interplay between social activism, journalism, and alleged criminal activities in the region. Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any additional information that could aid in the investigation and ensure justice is served.
